Day 1 Huaraz – Cashapampa – Llamacorral
There are two possible starting points for this trek; Cashapampa and Vaqueria. We will begin at Cashapampa (2900m). In the first couple of hours we enter the narrow Santa Cruz valley. The route is a steady climb and follows a river where children are often seen fishing. Throughout the first day a variety of flora is seen, including the native Quenual and Aliso bushes. The first day´s walking takes 5 hours, covers 10km and brings us to Llamacorral (3750m). A packed lunch will be eaten along the way.
Day 2 Llamacorral – Taullipampa
A good breakfast will be served before setting off at 7am. The route passes Ichiccocha and Hatuncocha, a beautiful pair of turquoise lakes, and continues under Quitaraju, Aguja, Caraz and Artesonraju (Paramount Pictures) mountains. Taulliraju glacier will be directly ahead of us throughout the day. The journey is flatter than on the previous day and will again take approximately 5 hours. Camp is set in Taullipampa, at an altitude of 4250m. Clients are offered the possibility of taking a detour past the Alpamayo base camp and the lake Arhuaycocha. This will add around 3 hours to the walking time.
Day 3 Taullipampa – Punta Union – Cachinapampa
This is the big day, beginning with a 3 hour, 500m ascent to Punta Union. From the high pass there is a panoramic view of the cordillera, notably Artesonraju, Quitaraju, Taulliraju, Pucaraju, Piramide, and Aguja mountains. We rest and enjoy the view for a while before beginning the descent, which passes Morococha and Saquicocha lakes and takes us to our final camping location, Cachinapampa (3750m).
Day 4 Cachinapampa – Vaqueria – Huaraz
We enjoy a steady descent to Vaqueria (3700m), passing through farmland and Quenual woodland. The bus will be waiting to take us back to Huaraz. The return bus journey is spectacular, passing Portachuelo (4768m) from where we see Huascaran, Huandoy, Chacraraju and Pisco Mountains before dropping down and passing directly by Llanganuco lake. We should arrive in Huaraz between 4.00 and 5.00pm.
